On September 25th over one hundred people attended a retirement party for MP Bruce Stanton, where tributes were given, memories were shared and thanks given for 16 years of exemplary public service and each was well deserved.
I am also pleased to announce the establishment of the Bruce Stanton Public Service Bursary at Lakehead University. The Bursary will be awarded to a student studying at Lakehead Orillia in the faculty of humanities and social sciences who has shown commitment to their community.
Lakehead University is on a mission to transform the lives of students. As a comprehensive undergraduate university that is at the service of the communities in which it resides and serves, Lakehead understands that providing an education that is about how to think, not what to think, is increasingly relevant today. However, they know that there are many barriers to accessing a university level education and that getting there is only part of the journey.
As our member of parliament representing Simcoe North for the last 16 years, Bruce has been a strong advocate for higher education as an agent of change within our communities and an avid supporter of the Lakehead Orillia campus. Bruce’s desire to assist students in their time of need and help further their educational aspirations aligns with Lakehead’s commitment in championing equity and access to postsecondary education.
The Bruce Stanton Public Service Bursary honors Bruce’s incredible dedication to public service and our community and will offer not only a legacy but an investment in lives of students; an impact that will be felt for years to come. A legacy is built on past accomplishments and I am asking you to invest in a future where students will be inspired to serve and assisted by the generosity of the constituents of Simcoe North.
The linked post card below gives direction on how to give. You can give monthly, annually or a one-time gift. All gifts over twenty dollars are completely tax deductible. Please know that your generous donation will help students realize the value of public service and a man who demonstrated it to each of us.
This began with a small idea last May and my hope is it will have an effect for years to come.
Sincerely,
Duncan McDonald
